ARE YOU 18 OR OLDER: Absolutely

CHARACTER
NAME: Hei (aliases: messier code BK-201, Li Shunsheng, Lee Hyunsik, Kuroda Nanashi)
CANON: Darker than Black
AGE: Twenty-five
CANON POINT: End of season two
HISTORY: World and character (both super short reads)
PERSONALITY:
As an alleged contractor — a being with great power, marked lack of emotion, and a proclivity for logical reasoning —, Hei is known to be a creature of apathy much the same as the rest. They hold notoriety in the series for being unfeeling liars and betrayers, designed by supernatural phenomena to obey only their strictest rational thoughts and an instinctual goal of self-preservation. Outwardly, he shows a staggering lack of empathy and compassion, devoid of most human decencies that keep him at an arm's distance from a world that's left him high and dry. Episode two shows us his understanding of these traits and an acceptance of what he's become in a helpful narrative exchanged between Chiaki, a woman he's stringing along to gather information, and himself. He describes contractors to her as inhumane monsters, killing machines, wolves in sheeps' clothing.

Hei is certainly no real exception to his own words; he lies, he betrays, he kills. These are his sins as a morally grey assassin. He has done unspeakable things: murdered families, friends, and lovers — from humans to contractors and anything in between, all at the order of any employer who gets him what he needs to survive. The absolute viciousness with which he conducts himself and carries out sick acts have earned him the title "Black Reaper", sticking with him for over a decade.

What contractor label he's earned is, however, something of a sham. Retaining the abilities of a typical contractor thanks to the sacrificial fusion of his soul with his sister Xing's, Hei has adopted everything she could do without the setbacks she suffered in life. For him this means that he can experience great and debilitating emotions any human can, yet has no mandatory "payment" — a contractor's compulsive need to perform a specific task as punishment for using their gifts. He has one foot through each species' door, a double-life he's acknowledged (with agonizing effort) he'll have to struggle with. Thinking of this as a saving grace for his character would be unfortunately untrue; his deceptions have made him infamous. To hide being a forgery of a contractor for so long a time is impressive, but also makes him something of an enigma to those who are unlucky enough to cross paths with him.

He's nothing if not difficult to get along with, showing irrational outbursts which have confused both humans and contractors who tend to believe that he's a freak of nature. Hei is a bit of an oddball to those he meets, having several quirks — some examples being his insatiable glutton's appetite, eating more than ten courses of the same meal in one sitting, and a surprising affinity for cooking chef-grade food from several different countries (Chinese cuisine from home, Thai fried rice, several Japanese dishes, and Russian pelmeni to name a few). Being so fond of these things, he has an appreciation for the mundane as his life has always been tragic. Normalcy and the little pleasures in life, while hard to let go of his neuroses enough to enjoy, are like small miracles.

The tragedies he's experienced have left him a very split, unstable individual, riddled with depression and post-traumatic stress that both contribute to his night terrors and vivid hallucinations. He has a cripplingly low idea of his own self-worth and it makes him protective to the point of possessiveness over the people who can tolerate his disjointed behaviour. He fixates on things when his emotional control is chipped away at and when those closest to him have their lives endangered, his personality shifts one hundred and eighty degrees.

Hei has a wicked temper. He becomes irate, he growls, he makes and carries out very real threats in manic states commonplace contractors are incapable of dreaming of. He's extremely prone to panic and its frequent attacks. In season one's episode four, Hei discovers that a father had been testing his research on his daughter and using her as a glorified guinea pig and shows a great deal of disgust towards the man, saying, "If you're looking for forgiveness, you won't get it from me." As irrational as it is, he will go out of his way and risk his own life for the lives of innocent people who've had an impact on him. The torment they experience he blames on himself and has, on several occasions, pushed him into vengeful mindsets. He's hesitant to form bonds for understandable reasons, keeping people at arm's length. Yin, his dear friend and doll — an emotionless, passive medium capable of summoning spectres used in tracking and reconnaissance —, develops a profound connection with Hei and is treated with both great care and respect. He's not an unreasonable monster, working hard for and showing deference to the ones he wishes to protect.

So while initially he appears to have little to no qualms about doing dreadful things in order to get what he wants, over the course of the series his "half"-contractor reveal explains far more of his personality. Hei has a fair amount of feeling in him, which finally gives us a three-dimensional view of his character. From the outside we see the merciless murderer, the deceitful, selfish creature. Inside, at his core, we see the deeply troubled, traumatized child soldier who's been used, abused, and discarded myriad times for myriad things. He has an a bad streak of gullibility, falling into the manipulative traps of both women and men, stumbling into unwise partnerships when he should know better.

Amber and his own sister, two of his partners he fought beside in a South American war, used him several times in their plans for reshaping the world. At the end of the series, Japan is very nearly destroyed by his and Amber's hands when she tries to force him into using his abilities against humankind — which is thankfully subverted. Yet time and time again he walks into the same circumstances. Not a very bright boy, when it comes down to brass tacks.

He may show many degrees of intelligence, most often street smarts as he doesn't have any formal education from the age of twelve on, but he's often bailed out of several scenarios he couldn't otherwise handle on his own. Perceptiveness varies with him, but it's a very notable quality; in combat he's an unsurmountable opponent due to his constant vigilance and unique, improvised ways of strategizing. While very quick on the uptake, a disciplined learner who knows several different languages and adept acting skills, Hei has been known to let the human side of him bite off more than it can chew.
POWERS:
HUMAN ABILITIES
— Olympian-level skill in athletics and acrobatics, can sprint long distances, wall-climb, and perform backflips with ease
— Expert in hand-to-hand combat, knowing several styles of martial arts taught to him in South America by General Leonard Maxray
— In peak physical form, giving him marked agility, power, and enough speed to dodge bullets at near point-blank range
— An implied dancer, lending to his loose flexibility, graceful reactionary dodging, and insane muscle control
— Surprisingly durable and takes hits like a champ, pulls a foot-long stake of wood out of his shoulder and moves on
— Has impressive dexterity, using daggers as grappling hooks and both melee to ranged weapons
— Human abilities said to be so advanced that he can take on a contractor without his powers with little physical strain

MOLECULAR MANIPULATION
— Generates and discharges electrical currents powerful enough to alter matter on a quantum level (yikes)
— Conducts electricity through resources available to him, such as water, metal, and physical contact
— Disables technologies several times with this ability, like computer-programmed locks, lights, anything electrical
— Can wipe memory with strong shocks applied to the base of the skull
— Alters chemical makeup using "special particle luminance", which can transform humans into contractors with enough energy output
— Changes volatile substances into stable compounds, i.e. gunpowder
— It doesn't have a stamina limit, using his ability over and over and over without noticeable fatigue
— When coupled with a meteor fragment, he was powerful enough to destroy a large portion of South America almost effortlessly
— Please nerf him*

*"NOTE: Hei will not be able to turn humans into contractors or destroy countries in game. He will be able to use his other powers, but overuse (which you can define as you please) will cause him great physical fatigue, and he will need to rest afterward."

WEAKNESSES, THANK GOD
— He's so dumb, he's just a dumb-ass who makes terrible decisions and needs help all the time
— Prone to panic attacks and delusions that can cripple him both socially and in combat
— Has a volatile temper, keep poking and prodding and he will lose his head and make a fool out of himself
— Short-range fighter, limiting him greatly in battle and making him useful only in close quarters throw-downs and on recon missions
— Alcoholic who quit cold turkey, but once an alcoholic always an alcoholic and he has many more reasons to start the habit up again
— Despite being in his ability section, he has human limits where durability and stamina is concerned; wear and tear shows
— Verbally and physically abusive, insults even those closest to him and backhands several women multiple times

MISC
ITEM: His beloved dagger (without wire attachment)
CHARACTER @ID SUGGESTIONS: @BK-201
HOW DID YOUR CHARACTER JOIN COST?
Hei was offered the job and he accepted it as bluntly as it was presented to him. His life was over, he had nothing to protect after killing the last person on Earth who cared about him, and he was ready to die with the memories of those he loved. What happened to him after the series' completion is unknown, which is the perfect setup for a voluntary sign-up — especially if the recruitment team conveyed to him that joining would keep the Universe free of the peaceful shackles the Regency wants to slap on it. Chaos is what created him and misery loves company.

While very quick on the uptake, a disciplined learner who knows several different languages and adept acting skills, Hei has been known to let the human side of him bite off more than it can chew.
CANON POWERS:
Hei received this ability from his sister, when she forcibly fused her body into his. It's a science-based power that is generated within his body after activation and discharges electrical currents that range in power from weak shocks to outputs staggering enough to alter matter on a quantum level. His electricity has to be conducted through the resources available available to him, such as water, metal, and physical contact. While he can dredge up the power from his own body, it's got a very, very short range, which makes him locked in close combat and susceptible to long-ranged attacks like sniper fire or something thrown at him from a distance.

As his molecular manipulation is actually tied to his ability to generate electricity, Hei can do anything that electricity is capable of doing when introduced to a system. This means that it can be used to disable technologies such as computer-programmed locks, light-sources that use electricity, machines, and can tamper with the brain itself when shocks are applied directly to the skull. Employing the use of his electricity against the brain can interfere with memory, from short-term to long-term (basically one step away from reducing someone to a brain-dead state with too much output). Under extreme duress, Hei can even channel lightning from active storm systems when he generates enough power within himself, as it makes him similar to a lightning rod—he can redirect the bolts and adds to their voltage.

Hei alters chemical makeup—the fundamental structures of people and things—using this electricity. His body basically emits a special blue radiation called "special particle luminance" that contractors employ when they activate their abilities. Of course, Hei's is far stronger and can actually have an effect on people and objects around him/he comes into contact with. Potential nerf: With a massive enough quantity of this radiation, he can even transform humans into contractors.

A notable use for this ability is the changing of volatile substances into stable compounds. Examples include—but are in no way limited to—the alteration of gunpowder so its gun's bullet doesn't fire from the barrel, counteracting poisons, and completely negating explosives. Potential nerf: On the more extreme side of things, Hei has separated a soul from its body and torn it out using this molecular manipulation, the same way his sister used it to fuse herself inside of him. Naturally, this means that Hei can do the same and seal himself away inside of any other poor sap... but this is permanent and not likely to ever occur. Potential nerf: With the rare addition of a special item called a "meteor shard" (literally a shard from a meteor which looks like a glass telescope lens), Hei is powerful enough to destroy half of a continent. Which was an accidental occurrence that rendered a massive part of South America void and inviolate, an area deemed inaccessible and dangerous, but it's said later in the series that Japan narrowly avoided this fate as well.

Both of these powers have no noticeable stamina limit as he uses his ability over and over without any visible fatigue thanks to his sister's soul working as a kind of generator within him. His body tires with regular exercise, however, and will exhaust him. He also has to eat a ton to make up for the ability's impressive burn of calories.

CRAU: N/A.

SPECIES: Human/Contractor
APPEARANCE: 1, 2, 3.
SKILLS:
STRENGTHS
— Olympian-level skill in athletics and acrobatics, can sprint long distances, wall-climb, and perform backflips with marked ease
— Expert in hand-to-hand combat and knife fighting, knowing several styles of martial arts taught to him in South America by a General Maxray (nicknamed The Iron Man)
— In peak physical form, giving him marked agility, power, and enough speed to dodge bullets at near point-blank range
— A dancer, lending to his loose flexibility, graceful reactionary dodging, and insane muscle control
— Surprisingly durable and takes hits like a champ, pulls a stake of wood out of his shoulder and carries on
— Has impressive dexterity, using daggers as grappling hooks and both melee to ranged weapons
— Human abilities said to be so advanced that he can take on a contractor without his powers with little physical strain
— Speaks several languages fluently (Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, English, Japanese, and Russian), while learned in others (English and Korean)
— Is a very, very good cook and prefers to make all of his own meals because he eats a metric fuck-ton

WEAKNESSES
— He's so dumb, he's just a dumb-ass who makes terrible decisions and needs help all the time
— Prone to panic attacks and delusions that can cripple him both socially and in combat
— Has a volatile temper, keep poking and prodding and he will lose his head and make a fool out of himself
— Typically a short-ranged fighter, limiting him greatly in battle and making him useful only in close quarters throw-downs and on recon missions
NEW POWER:
He'll be receiving somatosensory imprint, which is the tracking and finding of objects or people after having touched them once before. Its range isn't extreme — he can't follow someone to the ends of the Earth —, but it manifests in ghostly impressions as bright, shapeless glows that grow more and more accurate in shape the closer he gets to his target. Over long distances this signal will be faint until he's hot on its trail, where vague impressions become full silhouettes. The duration of this power varies with exertion and overuse, but is ultimately decided by Hei and how much he can handle. He can turn it off and on at will.

POWER REASONING:
This power is very similar to what a Doll might use in his world, often seen utilizing a projection called an "observation spirit" to track targets. Instead of being able to project an observation spirit, however, objects or people leave their own imprints on the world for him to follow. Like visible neon tracks. Hei's spent many years watching Dolls work their magic and they've had a very large impact on who he is as a person. Not to mention it has a lot of grow potential and he'll inevitably get up to a ton of shenanigans with it. I think it could be interesting and suitable to the underlying plot while remaining true to his own interests.

He may show many degrees of intelligence, most often street smarts as he doesn't have any formal education, but he's often bailed out of several scenarios he couldn't otherwise handle on his own.
ABILITIES/SKILLS:
HUMAN ABILITIES
— Olympian-level skill in athletics and acrobatics, can sprint long distances, wall-climb, and perform backflips with ease
— Expert in hand-to-hand combat, knowing several styles of martial arts taught to him in South America by General Leonard Maxley
— In peak physical condition, giving him marked agility, power, and enough speed to dodge bullets at near point-blank range
— A trained dancer, lending to his loose flexibility, graceful reactionary dodging, and insane muscle control
— Extremely good cook, chef-level culinary skills
— Can eat anime-protagonist-levels of food in one sitting, which is super relevant and important

MOLECULAR MANIPULATION
— Generates and discharges electrical currents powerful enough to alter matter on a quantum level
— Conducts electricity through resources available to him, such as water, metal, and physical contact
— Disables technologies several times with this ability, like computer-programmed locks, lights, anything electrical
— Can wipe short-term memory with strong shocks applied to the base of the skull
— Alters chemical makeup using "special particle luminance", which can transform humans into contractors with enough energy output (humans into contractors ability nerfed)
— Changes volatile substances into stable compounds, i.e. gunpowder, drugs/poisons, chemicals

— When coupled with a meteor fragment, he was powerful enough to destroy a large portion of South America almost effortlessly (oh yes, definitely nerfed)

WEAKNESSES
INVENTORY/COMPANIONS:
His outfit, two daggers, a belt with embedded metal wire, and a collapsible crossbow that fits into a pouch at his hip.
FACTION CHOICE: Moon Temple.

REASON:
Hei is, by nature, logical. He was raised with Contractors — metahumans who can only think rationally and without emotion — and has adhered to their ways well into adulthood. While he can be emotional and instinctual on occasion, he tends to err on the side of caution as he's a rather neurotic, paranoid man who'd rather take the time to assess a situation than barrel in without a plan.

Rationality drives him, as well as his own pessimism that tends to lump him into the "worrying genius" category... despite his shortcomings where book-smarts are concerned. He's the definition of a "doer", anchors himself in the grim reality of things and is a bit of a Debbie downer. I think he'll fit right in. If he actually finds a reason to care enough to lend the faction a hand.
TATTOO: A band around the bicep.

IN CHARACTER

Character Name: Hei.
Canon: Darker than Black.
Canon Point: End of season two.

In-Game Tattoo Placement: Here, as a band around the arm at the elbow. The base of the antlers fade into a gradient of stippling.
Current Health/Status: Tired and hungry, but healthy.
Age: Twenty-five.
Species: Human/"contractor".

Content Warnings: Post-traumatic stress disorder, acute paranoia and anxiety, child soldiers, physical, verbal, and mental abuse, suicidal ideation.

History: World and character (both easy reads).

CRAU History and Impact: N/A.
He describes contractors to her as inhumane monsters, killing machines, wolves in sheep's clothing.

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Absolutely.
What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: Tension, the buildup when you know the hammer's going to drop but you don't know when, getting thicker and thicker until you feel extremely uncomfortable. Mystery, the confusing twists and turns that leave you reeling. Psychological thrillers are my all-time favourite, but I love anything uncomfortable. This includes extreme violence, slasher type scenes, gore, creepy crawlies, and any other horrible thing under the sun.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Nothing at all.
Additional Information: The soul of Hei's sister Xing was forced into him and now he operates with two, which in turn fuels his abilities. If at any time there's someone who can sense souls or events that could have an effect on souls, this will go doubly for him, and if Xing's soul is torn away from him he may lose his powers entirely. Canon's iffy on this, but I'll do whatever sounds more interesting!

Abilities & Skills:

With a massive enough quantity of this radiation, he can even transform humans into contractors.

A notable use for this ability is the changing of volatile substances into stable compounds. Examples include—but are in no way limited to—the alteration of gunpowder so its gun's bullet doesn't fire from the barrel, counteracting poisons, and completely negating explosives. On the more extreme side of things, Hei has separated a soul from its body and torn it out using this molecular manipulation, the same way his sister used it to fuse herself inside of him. Naturally, this means that Hei can do the same and seal himself away inside of any other poor sap... but this is permanent and not likely to ever occur. With the rare addition of a special item called a "meteor shard" (literally a shard from a meteor which looks like a glass telescope lens), Hei is powerful enough to destroy half of a continent.

HUMAN ABILITIES

— Despite being in his ability section, he has human limits where durability and stamina is concerned; wear and tear shows
— Verbally and physically abusive, insults even those closest to him and backhands women and children
Inventory/Companions: His outfit, a pair of daggers, and a belt with embedded metal wire.

Choice: Witch.
Reason: Hei is only accustomed to the cerebral, scientific use of power. So, as he'd have to learn to be creative with the magic in Aefenglom, this sounds extremely entertaining. He is prone to babysitting, as well, so having a couple of Monsters to take care of won't be a huge departure from what he does in his canon.

Sample: Log, Deerington.

He describes contractors as inhumane killing machines, wolves in sheep's clothing. Hei is certainly no exception to his own words; he lies, he betrays, and he kills, at the beck and call of any employer who'll pay him in cash or information.

OFFBEAT. Initially, he appears to have little to no qualms about doing dreadful things to get what he wants. What we're presented with is a murderer, a deceitful and selfish creature. Inside, at his core, what he truly is is a deeply troubled human being. Hei has only adopted the abilities of a contractor, not the inherent personality traits. This is due to the sacrificial fusion of his and his sister's souls. He has a fair amount of feeling in him, capable of experiencing the great and debilitating emotions all humans can, which finally gives us a three-dimensional view of his character. An oddball to those he meets, both humans and contractors often have no idea what to make of him. He's an insatiable glutton, capable of eating several courses of food in one sitting, he has an affinity for cooking chef-grade food, and he is a hobbyist stargazer. Being so fond of these things, he has an appreciation for the mundane as his life has been invariably upsetting. Normalcy and the little pleasures in life, while hard to let go of his neuroses enough to enjoy, are like small miracles. The forms of entertainment he engages in are approached restrainedly, taking great care not to overindulge. When he does, he becomes easily fixated and often develops addictions.

SPECIALIZED. This is, in part, because he's fundamentally not too bright. Hei's always been a rather plain, unostentatious man. He may show many degrees of intelligence, most often street smarts as he doesn't have any formal education, but he's constantly being bailed out of scenarios he couldn't otherwise handle on his own. Perceptiveness varies with him, but it makes up for the book smarts he lacks; in combat, he's a powerful opponent due to his constant vigilance and unique, improvised ways of strategizing. While very quick on the uptake, a disciplined learner who knows several different languages and adept acting skills, Hei has been known to let the human side of him bite off more than it can chew. He has a bad streak of gullibility, falling into the manipulative traps of both women and men, stumbling into unwise partnerships when he should know better.

UNSTABLE. The tragedies he's experienced have left him a very split individual, riddled with depression and post-traumatic stress that contribute to night terrors and vivid hallucinations. He has a cripplingly low idea of his own self-worth and it makes him protective to the point of possessiveness over the people who can tolerate this disjointed behaviour. He dwells heavily on things when his strict emotional control is chipped away, and his personality has been known to shift sharply. Hei has a wicked temper, often becoming irate, prone to issuing real threats in manic states contractors are incapable of. Additionally, he's a panicked individual who tends to lash out physically and verbally at others. This is seen many times in the form of hypocritical accusations, showing humans and contractors a great deal of disgust for their cruel actions. As irrational as a cold mercenary with a bleeding heart is, he will go out of his way and risk his own life for the lives of innocent people who've had an impact on him. The injury and death of those he's perceived as close to him push him into vengeful mindsets. He's hesitant to form bonds for these understandable reasons, trying his level best to keep others at arm's length. He's not an unreasonable monster, working hard for and showing deference to the ones he wishes to protect, but his life is chaos; he wouldn't willingly invite others to share in any of it with him.
      Suitability:
Hei is a mercenary. He, therefore, has experienced many displacements and strange phenomena, as his world has supernatural/paranormal qualities. It won't perturb him to know that there are aliens somewhere in this universe, but it will be frightening to him to be placed in this world with no direct route home. He doesn't have a strong connection to Earth, however, as he's just lost everything and everyone important to him; it will take him no time to adapt and assimilate.

Synchrony will be difficult for him to accept and utilize, by nature of being predominantly touch-oriented (he will benefit greatly from manna-generating conversations, despite the consequences that come with being stingy). In time, his caginess will lessen. Due to his loneliness, desperation, and instability, he latched on to anyone who can tolerate his antics, so eventually, he'll have those people to rely on. Given a mission, he'll do it well, and getting paid by the government for manna generation will be a very attractive, potentially lucrative job. Furthermore, Hei is unfortunately accustomed to having new powers forced on him. His Ruby abilities, when discovered and controlled with training, will be utilized as efficiently and effectively as he uses his molecular manipulation. Another weapon in his arsenal, he won't mind terribly much and it will further incentivize him to keep the manna flowing.

As I leave the body transformations to other roleplayers, preferring to react to their unique changes, Hei won't be experiencing any. I may change my mind on that, but for now, his response to witnessing monster transformations in the individuals around him will be negative. In his eyes, they'll be beasts to be wary of, which might be an interesting departure from Captain Kirk's wholehearted acceptance of them. It'll become tolerated, but never accepted; he doesn't trust others to be able to control themselves.

As for the native Gems, their government, and the world itself, Hei will find them fascinating. Whereas some would wish to investigate to destroy the mystique, he will keep his distance from the alien Gems most of the time. While he'll treat them just as well (or as poorly) as he treats anyone else, he will be a bit starstruck for the first little while, finding them difficult to speak with and operate around. This is, in part, due to the fact that paranormal aspects of his canon have not been explained but are thought to be caused by extraterrestrials or something that developed in space and fell to Earth to infect it. Knowing, after his arrival, that the existence of other civilizations in the universe is proven theory will be something of a strange relief to Hei. All in all, it'll all boil down into a neutral relationship; if they mind their own business, he'll mind his.
Condition upon arrival: A little battle-weary, bruised and sporting new scars, but ultimately fine.

      Abilities:
Hei received this ability from his sister when she forcibly fused her body into his. It's a science-based power that is generated within his body after activation and discharges electrical currents that range in power from weak shocks to outputs tremendous enough to alter matter on a quantum level. His electricity has to be conducted through three core resources: water, metal, and physical contact. The very nature of it is short-range; he's often locked into close combat scenarios, which makes him susceptible to long-ranged attacks like sniper fire.

As his molecular manipulation is actually tied to his ability to generate electricity, Hei can do anything that electricity is capable of doing when introduced to a system. This means that it can be used to disable technologies such as computer-programmed locks, light sources that use electricity, machines, and can tamper with the brain itself when shocks are applied directly to the skull. Employing the use of his electricity against the brain can interfere with memory, from short-term to long-term (basically one step away from reducing someone to a brain-dead state with too much output). Under extreme duress, as his ability makes him similar to a lightning rod, Hei can even channel lightning from active storm systems, redirect bolts, and add to their voltage.

Hei alters chemical make-up—the fundamental structure of everything we know—using this electricity. His body emits special blue radiation called "special particle luminance" that is unique to his power, actively affecting people and objects around him/he comes into contact with. With a massive enough quantity of this radiation, he can even transform humans into contractors.

A notable use for this ability is the changing of volatile substances into stable compounds. Examples include the alteration of metal and gunpowder so a gun's bullets cannot fire from its barrel, counteracting poisons in his or another's system, and negating explosives. On the more extreme side of things, Hei has the ability to separate souls from their bodies; naturally, this means that Hei can do what his sister did to him and seal himself away inside of any other poor sap. This is, however, very permanent and not likely to ever occur. With the rare addition of a special item called a "meteor shard"—a supernatural enhancer that looks like a glass telescope lens—Hei is powerful enough to destroy half of a continent and render areas of land void and inviolate (incapable of being accessed by normal means).

IC INFORMATION

Name: Hei
Canon: Darker Than Black
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Species: Human (inherited Contractor power)
Appearance: Sad man alert
Canon point: End of Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor

History: World and character

Personality answers:
Q: Who in your character's canon influenced the most growth in your character? What do they think about this character?

A: Hei's sister, Xing. He cared for her until he couldn't, and several key failures on Xing's part guided Hei into becoming the monster he is today. When Hei was eleven, a meteor shower changed Xing into a Contractor, and she was recruited as an operative by the Syndicate. He became a child soldier to follow her. When Hei was seventeen, Xing fused her body with his, giving him her abilities and causing a massive explosion that enveloped Brazil and other parts of South America. He was abandoned and began to work for the Syndicate alone. When Hei was twenty-two, Xing was revealed to have existed inside his soul since the explosion, and a manifestation of her encouraged him to remain human. Despite everything, their meeting rewrote what Hei planned for his life; he spent years searching for Xing only to find her dead within him, which drove his decision to live as both human and Contractor.

His feelings on her and the events that created them are a tangle of good and bad: She was a master manipulator who worked with their comrade, Amber, to protect him. In doing so, they led him to forsake his humanity. Forfeiting his childhood, becoming a mercenary, and discovering himself and his ideals—Xing orchestrated it all. He hates and loves her more than anything, but regrets not killing her when they were teenagers. While there was no saving Xing, Hei will never forgive himself for being unable to save his little sister.

Q: Explain which event in canon is most pivotal to your character's development, and who they are today.

A: The conclusion of Earth's third world war, Heaven's War, in South America. Hei's sister, Xing, disappeared during this event, and he became a Contractor. A massive explosion was caused by the scheming of Xing and their leader, Amber. They wanted to protect him from the outcome, so they kept him in the dark about their plans, drastically changing his life.

Where before the end of the war, Xing was Hei's reason to kill, losing her and witnessing so much death severely traumatized him. He turned to mercenary work to travel the world searching for a sister who was dead, which led him into the events that transpired in the show. In believing Xing was alive and still operating somewhere in the world, Hei committed acts that made him more monster than man, contributing to his current personality. He was softer in South America, though allegedly a fiercer combatant; he had relationships to dedicate himself to. Stripped of them, he became a shell of himself, losing the thread of why he chose to live as a soldier and assassin.

Q: What is your character most afraid of?

A: Hei is afraid of being alone. This is embarrassing, considering the overwhelming disdain he has for himself and most people. He's lost comrades, family, and a past flame, which has whittled him down into a creature of desperation. No longer fully human, he has difficulty relating to humans; never a full Contractor, he has difficulty relating to Contractors. So, he tends to imprint on those who—he feels—need him, which is why he's always stuck lending a hand to hopeless cases who remind him too much of past relationships.

There's always a zero-point-something percent chance of Hei developing an unhealthy attachment to anyone who manages to hold his interest. His brain has instituted this self-preservation tactic to protect him because, without it, he'd have no reason to live. Being alone is bad for Hei, and he instinctively understands this. He believes his worth, therefore, is bound to others, and he's afraid of losing them.

Q: What would your character say is their best trait? What is truly their best trait?

A: Usefulness is what Hei feels defines his character. He's a weapon in human skin, capable of feats most aren't. He excels at what he does, and he'll learn if he doesn't know how to approach a task. His adaptability to suit any situation makes him desirable as a Contractor to businesses or governments that hire him. Hei has little self-worth beyond his capabilities. He considers himself a cockroach: unkillable and unable to contribute to the world beyond that.

His practicality is his truest best trait. His significant lack of emotional investment separates him from any other killer. He is mercenary in duty and mind. While Hei assumes everyone's out to get him—a paranoid expectation often proven real—he's not out to get everyone. He can keep his emotions so tightly leashed it'd be more convenient for the people he meets to claim he has none at all. Hei is the spirit of impartiality, willing to work for anyone—even former or current enemies—if they reward him.
Inventory:
  • Set of clothing (I know clothing doesn't count, but he has a spool of wire in his belt that attaches to his daggers, so I figured I'd add it!)
  • Telescope
  • His sister's blue hair tie
  • Set of two daggers

Powers/Abilities:
Human Abilities
  • Olympian-level skill in athletics and acrobatics, can sprint long distances, wall-climb, and perform backflips with ease.
  • Expert in hand-to-hand combat, knowing several styles of martial arts taught to him in South America by General Leonard Maxley.
  • In peak physical condition, giving him marked agility, power, and enough speed to dodge bullets at near point-blank range.
  • A trained dancer, lending to his loose flexibility, graceful reactionary dodging, and insane muscle control.
  • Surprisingly durable and takes hits like a champ, pulls a foot-long stake of wood out of his shoulder and moves on.
  • Has impressive dexterity, using daggers as grappling hooks and both melee and ranged weapons.
  • Human abilities are said to be so advanced that he can take on a contractor without his powers with little physical strain.
  • Extremely good cook, chef-level culinary skills.
  • Can eat anime-protagonist-levels of food in one sitting, which is super relevant and important.

Contractor Abilities: Electrokinesis/Molecular Manipulation
  • Generates and discharges electrical currents powerful enough to alter matter on a quantum level. (Recommended Nerf: No altering of people, only things.)
  • Conducts electricity through resources available to him, such as water, metal, and physical contact.
  • Can disable technologies with this ability, like computer-programmed locks, lights, and anything electrical affected by a powerful electrical current.
  • Memory can be wiped with strong shocks applied to the base of the skull. (Note: Only with permission from another player.)
  • Alters chemical makeup using "special particle luminance", which can transform humans into contractors with enough energy output. (Recommended Nerf: Temporary, and only with permission from another player. It'd be funny if the agreeing character loses all illogical thoughts, emotions, and feelings for others by becoming a Contractor for an impermanently short time.)
  • Changes volatile substances into stable compounds, i.e. gunpowder, drugs/poisons, chemicals.
  • Coupled with a meteor fragment, he was powerful enough to destroy a large portion of South America and make it impossible to access. (Recommended Nerf: I'd lose this entirely, as it can be game-breaking for apparent reasons. Let me know if it somehow becomes plot-relevant and you're interested in using it; I won't be using it myself anyway.)
Samples: Log sample and text sample.
Player Goals:
So many... Being upended and sent somewhere to fight for a mysterious organization is nothing new to Hei, so that part he'll have no trouble with. While he might disagree with Patho-Gen robbing him of his opportunity to unalive himself after the end of Gemini of the Meteor, he'll fit well into this society. Eventually, he will have no problem doing as he's told. Hei will also undoubtedly Lock In on the most random people, which will already be hilarious for me to play out.

I'd love to get him involved in the criminal workings of Karteria, as this is where he flourishes. This is a given, though, and I want to focus on something unorthodox because I love making fun of him. As Hei's a Terra, I want him to develop a specialized palate for weird, nebulous shit like sunlight, and things like tasty nutrients in dirt, fertilizer, and water. This will make him uniquely suited to becoming a cook for Terra and Golem Natural Souls. Maybe he can open a hole-in-the-wall that's both a legitimate restaurant and a front for illicit activities???
Soul Choice: Terra, based on the Banisteriopsis caapi (ayahuasca) and Gleditsia sinensis (Chinese honey locust). I want people to have weird hallucinations and opportunities for deep spiritual growth, apparently.
